Chapter Twelve

“Layla?”

An elbow nudged my side and I jerked up from slouching on the desktop.

Blinking fast, I gasped as I realized I’d fallen asleep.

Me. The nerdy school lover. I’d dozed during class.

First, I checked Fedoz, who was still droning on about the evolution of the notochord in species. With his back mostly to us, leaning against the instructor table, he must not have noticed I was napping.

I thought it would be kind of cool having a “primary” instructor to lead our program. Only one person to please. Efficient, right? We still had other instructors for some of the coursework, but they were all remote. Online teachers didn’t really break up the monotony of us always listening to Fedoz. Goodness, he liked to, well, talk.

Then I turned to the source of my alarm clock.

Dirk.

He’d sat next to me in the classroom, and as he made eye contact with an epic eye roll and smirk, I wanted to grumble.

While I was thankful he’d woken me up, I still loathed that fact I’d fallen asleep in class. It might be a trivial mistake for others, but I took my education seriously.

Then again, if any of this was new to me, I might find it interesting enough to resist sleeping.

It was all Flynn’s fault. He kept me up at night. Or I did him. No, none of that. We were still waiting to take that step. It was a given we loved each other and wanted a future together, but call it kismet, a hunch, I didn’t know, but we weren’t ready to progress our relationship in a physical way.

His kisses were heavenly, and having his hands on my skin as we fooled around a bit was addicting. Yet we only slept together—the normal, unconscious resting kind—in his bed each night after we practiced.

I’d started out with misgivings about teaching Flynn the method I’d mastered under Ivelis’s patience, and we used his apartment and basic houseplants as our testing grounds. Just like it had for me, it was taking Flynn a couple of weeks of conditioning to hopefully figure out how to see his energy to resist mine.

Late nights with Flynn on our secret training. Long days of classwork, studying, and reading for both of our respective classes. We both ran and still trained with Martino in the gym.

It was no wonder I’d dozed.

Yawning, I glanced down at Knightley, who stared at the door. Nearly every day before I started classes, I deposited him at the Menagerie for his training that Nevis and Suthering thought of. Probably for the best, socializing him with the other grogs and animals instead of expecting him to nap while I had class. One day soon, though, the mystery of their project was going to get me, and I’d just have to know what they had in mind. Grogs had many unique skills, and I wondered what they wanted to hone in on and develop.

His tail wagged, and I shifted my leg over so the spiky end wouldn’t smack me.
